Annual review 2002/2003

Introduction by Chief Executive, Sandy Buchan

Our annual review this year takes us on a journey through some of the different aspects of the refugee experience, from arrival through to settlement and in some cases, return home. In the first section six courageous refugees tell us their stories. These stories are complimented by the voices of some of our partners. Here we read snapshots that offer a unique and poignant perspective on what it really means to seek safety in Britain today. The testimonies challenge us all to see things from a different perspective.

The important thread running through this review, from the shocking story of Marthe, who was nearly forced to sleep rough, to the dilemmas posed by return to Iraq for Sardar, is the honesty and dignity with which refugees told us their stories. Over and over again they challenge the idea that their cases are bogus; that they come to take advantage without contributing back. Over and over again it is clear that what motivates refugees to come here is the situation in their own country, plus an idea that Britain is still dedicated to human rights. It’s up to all of us to prove them right.

We want a society in which refugees are welcome, respected and safe, and in which they can achieve their full potential. In the coming year we will renew our commitment to this vision; and we will build on the quality of our advice and community work, thereby helping us assist refugees in exercising the choices which are available to them.
