Church celebration kicks off Refugee Week in Nottingham

12 June 2004

Musical performances and food from around the world will be just some of the entertainment on offer at St Peter’s Church on Saturday June 12th as part of national Refugee Week.

Volunteers will be at St Peter’s Gate in the city centre from 11am until 3pm distributing information and inviting people into the church to find out more about the week’s upcoming events and the issues surrounding asylum seekers and refugees in Nottingham.

The event has been organised, in partnership with St Peter’s Church, by staff from the Nottingham branch of Refugee Action, an independent, national charity working to enable refugees to build new lives in the UK.  They will be on hand to answer questions from the public, alongside representatives from other local organisations involved in supporting refugees and asylum seekers.

Organiser Caron McLoughlin, of Refugee Action, said: “Refugee Week is about celebrating the economic, cultural and social contributions of asylum seekers and refugees to the UK.  This is a great opportunity for members of the public to learn more about the refugee experience, while enjoying the free entertainment and finding out about other exciting events taking place in Nottingham during Refugee Week.”

For more information on these events please contact Julia Ravenscroft, press officer at Refugee Action, on 0161 233 1956 or juliar@refugee-action.org.uk.
