Refugee Action is calling for solidarity among the diverse communities of Britain following the bombings that took place in London on July 7th.
The charity fears that after such an event, some people may feel it is acceptable to direct their anger towards members of the Muslim community and other ethnic minorities, including asylum seekers and refugees.
Any backlash is totally unacceptable and would only play into the hands of the terrorists who wish to divide our communities.
Sandy Buchan, Chief Executive of Refugee Action, said: “The vast majority of people in Britain of all faiths and nationalities are appalled and deeply saddened by the terrorist attacks that took place in London. We must not give in to the hatred of the terrorists by looking for retribution against innocent members of our communities.”
Refugee Action would urge anyone who witnesses any incidents of abuse or intimidation to come forward and tell the authorities. It should be remembered that racist abuse is against the law and carries a fine or a prison sentence.
