The Greater Manchester Training Team offer a range of training packages with the aim of promoting understanding and awareness of asylum seekers and refugees and supporting the delivery of more accessible and equitable services.

UNDERSTANDING REFUGEES AND ASYLUM

Gain the knowledge, practical understanding and confidence you need to meet the challenges of working with migrant groups:

  • Clarify the distinctions between refugees, asylum seekers and other migrant groups.
  • Learn why people come to the UK seeking safety, how they get here and what happens when they arrive.
  • Understand the rights and entitlements of migrant groups within the framework of current legislation.
  • Gain an insight into the personal experiences and problems faced by asylum seekers within the UK asylum system.
  • Apply what you have learnt to your workplace and learn how you can be better supported in your work with refugees and asylum seekers.

This course is ideal for anyone whose work currently or potentially engages with asylum seekers and refugees, including community groups, medical staff, social workers, police, accommodation providers, teachers, etc.



AN INTRODUCTION TO ASYLUM SUPPORT

If you are new to the asylum field or need a refresher on recent changes, this course provides an up to date and clear introduction to the UK asylum support system. The course includes details on the differing levels of support for people at various stages of their asylum claims, from initial application to refugee status or final refusal.

  • Understand the initial support available for asylum seekers under the Asylum Support system, including emergency accommodation and financial support.
  • Identify the roles of UKBA and the Asylum Support Service (formerly NASS)
  • Understand Possible restrictions in the support service (e.g. section 55)
  • Explore support for refugees
  • Understand support options for refused asylum seekers (e.g. section 4)
  • The issue of destitution and working with destitute clients
    Options for voluntary return

This course is ideal for anyone who provides advice to refugees and/or asylum seekers, or those who work in accommodation or benefit provision.



FEMALE GENITAL MUTILATION AND REFUGEE WOMEN’S HEALTH

Using case studies of real experiences, this unique course explores problems specific to refugee women’s health, with a focus on female genital mutilation (FGM), resulting complications and protection issues.

  • Background to types of persecution suffered by women asylum seekers and refugees and how these can affect their physical and mental health.
  • Female Genital Mutilation – cultures that practice FGM, types of FGM, and implications for women’s health and childbirth.
  • UK legislation and child protection policy.
  • Case studies and action planning.

The course is ideal for medical staff, midwives, mental health practitioners, midwives and teachers who work with refugees and asylum seekers.



SUPPORTING ASYLUM SEEKERS AND REFUGEES WITH MENTAL HEALTH NEEDS

Learn how the experiences of asylum seekers and refugees affect their mental health, both before and after arrival in Britain. Gain the cultural awareness you need to enable the delivery of more appropriate and accessible services.

  • The mental health implications of fleeing persecution and leaving home
  • The UK asylum process and its impact on mental health
    Statistics on the mental health of asylum seekers and refugees
  • Cultural diversity in attitudes and approaches to mental health
  • How you can meet the needs of this client group more effectively

This course is aimed at mental health practitioners, mental health trusts and voluntary organisations, social workers and social work students, counsellors, advisors, and anyone who works with refugees and asylum seekers and needs to increase their awareness of the possible mental health problems that these clients may be facing.



KEY ISSUES IN WORKING WITH UNACCOMPANIED CHILDREN

This course will provide a practical understanding of the experiences and needs of unaccompanied young asylum seekers, as well as providing information concerning the way in which young asylum seekers are processed and cared for under UK asylum and child protection legislation.

Topics include:

  • What it means to be an asylum seeker or refugee and the differences between these two groups of people
  • Why unaccompanied asylum seeking and refugee children may have left their country and are now alone in the UK
  • The needs and experiences of both accompanied and unaccompanied asylum seeking and refugee children
  • Legislation and age disputes
  • The impact of the asylum seeking process on asylum seeking and refugee children

 

Suitable for:

This course is very beneficial to anyone working with children, especially social workers, teachers, health professionals and counsellors who need to understand both the legal background and the personal issues in relation to unaccompanied asylum seeking children
