Refugee Action is one of the leading refugee agencies in the sector. Our distinctiveness is that we have a strong national profile with well-established local roots in major cities and communities across the UK. Last year we received visits from around 30,000 asylum seekers and refugees.

In December 2001, the Guardian and Observer newspapers chose Refugee Action to be a beneficiary of their Christmas charity appeal. In keeping with Refugee Action’s key aim of helping the voices of refugees and asylum seekers to be heard, the agency worked with journalists to provide a five-week series of reports documenting the experiences of refugees and asylum seekers. More than 6,000 people made donations, raising over £300,000 for Refugee Action. The appeal broke all records for a Christmas appeal.
In 2001 we worked with the Co-operative Bank on a cause-related marketing campaign. The bank chose us, along with three other charities to work with them on their Customers who Care campaign which was aiming to encourage people to look beyond the usual stereotype of a refugee or an asylum seeker and see the real story. We supported the Co-operative Bank in producing materials for the campaign including a video and organising events.
Over a six-month period every time a customer used their credit card a percentage of the transaction was donated to the charities by the bank. Each customer could choose which charity was to benefit from their vote and Refugee Action received almost a quarter of all customer votes, and benefited to the tune of £15,180.
